Acquired HIV from Kidney Donor

A kidney transplant patient contracted HIV from living donor kidney given. This case represents the first documented case in the United States since HIV screening was introduced in the mid-1980s.

Mentioned that kidney donors are not safe sex 11 weeks before HIV test results are negative. Kidney transplant operation was conducted in 2009 and became known only a year later the patient was HIV positive.

The Center for Disease and Prevention (CDC) recommends screening for infectious diseases such as HIV or hepatitis in donated organs that would be repeated a week before the transplant operation. But many foreign transplant organization in the country that does not rule out exactly when screening should be done.

"The most sensitive tests of infectious diseases should be done before the transplant," said Dr. Colin Shepard of New York City health department.

Donor organ recipients had AIDS was mentioned because he was still taking medication to suppress the immune system to prevent rejection of transplanted organs. Both the donor or the organ recipients are now receiving HIV therapy, but neither condition is described.

"We do not know how often such cases occur and we are still collecting evidence," said Dr. Matthew Kuehnert, CDC officials.

Earlier in the American mass media never reported the case of a woman's claim because he infected with HIV through a kidney transplant. However, the CDC has not investigated the case. A similar case has also been found in Italy in 1989.
